Why TDS and Hardness Can Be Confused
The confusion is understandable because both measurements relate to dissolved substances. In groundwater, calcium and magnesium can make up a substantial part of dissolved solids, so a water source with high TDS may also be hard. Can High TDS Mean Hard Water?
It can, but it does not prove it. High TDS often occurs alongside hardness in groundwater because calcium and magnesium are common dissolved minerals. However, TDS is a broad measurement, so the same TDS value can result from different combinations of dissolved ions.
