What Makes Water Hard?

Temporary and Permanent Hardness

Some hardness is associated with bicarbonates and can be reduced by boiling under suitable conditions. Other hardness is associated with sulphates, chlorides and other salts and is not removed simply by boiling. Household treatment therefore depends on the actual water chemistry.

TDS means total dissolved solids. It is a broad measure of dissolved material and can include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate and other substances. Two samples can have similar TDS values but different hardness, so a TDS meter is not a substitute for a hardness test.

Why Hard Water Can Matter for Hair

Research has examined calcium and magnesium uptake by human hair and structural changes after hard-water exposure. The literature suggests that water hardness can influence mineral deposition on the hair fibre, but it is not strong enough to say that hard water causes hair loss in everyone.
